President Trump told media on Thursday that he had personally sent a message to the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei, urging the country's leadership to engage in direct talks with the United States.

Trump reiterated that he prefers to negotiate with Iran, but that the United States will not allow the Islamic Republic to possess nuclear weapons, and that 'all options are on the table'. Iran's leadership maintains that based on the current state of affairs, it is not interested in renewed talks with the US.

Iran's leader has not yet responded to the message, and the nature of its content is currently unknown, but it is possible that the message will simply be ignored, as Iran has done in the past, when Khamenei stated: 'Trump is not a person I consider worthy of giving a response'.

If a response is given, it will likely be conveyed through a third party, such as a regional Arab nation with close ties to Iran and the US, like the Sultanate of Oman or Qatar.
