One of New Zealand’s most recent mysteries and unsolved cases has had a massive breakthrough: Tom Phillips was shot dead by New Zealand police after he wounded a police officer in the head.

In December 2021, Tom Phillips disappeared, taking his three young children with him.

Phillips had an unstable marriage with his wife, Catherine, which led to their divorce. Custody of the children was initially shared, until he eventually lost custody of all three.

Since December 2021, police had been unable to locate him or his children. Thanks to his wilderness experience and survivalist skills, Phillips managed to evade capture by the authorities.

However, sightings and reports of his criminal behavior continued well into 2023 and 2024. He was accused of stealing a Toyota Hilux in 2023, robbing a bank in May of that same year, and committing aggravated assault after shooting at a supermarket worker.

Despite increased searches and the involvement of the New Zealand Armed Forces, authorities failed to track him down, as he repeatedly evaded capture.

Clash Turned Deadly
On September 8, 2025, Tom Phillips was shot dead by New Zealand police.

While attempting to rob a store with one of his children, he was chased by uniformed officers. He wounded a police officer in the head with a rifle. Because New Zealand police officers do not routinely carry firearms, armed backup had to be called in. A confrontation between Phillips and armed officers resulted in his death.

A search of the area led to the discovery of all three children at a campsite. They are currently in government care and will be returned to their mother, Catherine.

The wounded police officer is in stable but serious condition.

Tom Philips managed to evade New Zealand authorities for a record time of three years, a significant feat considering the amount of state resources poured to find him.
