Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip killed at least nine people and wounded dozens on Sunday as Egypt hosted a new round of talks involving Hamas and other Palestinian factions aimed at preserving a fragile U.S.-brokered "ceasefire."
Health officials said five people were killed and 16 wounded when a strike hit a police post near a large tent encampment for displaced families in the al-Mawasi area near Khan Younis.
Later, another airstrike struck a vehicle in Gaza City, killing four people and wounding four others.
Major fighting in Gaza has been largely paused since October 2025 under a "ceasefire" agreement brokered by the United States.
However, negotiations on a broader plan involving an Israeli military withdrawal, the disarmament of Hamas and the reconstruction of Gaza have remained stalled.
Egypt began hosting a new round of discussions with Hamas leaders and representatives of other Palestinian factions, according to sources from Hamas and people familiar with the negotiations.
The talks are expected to continue for several days.
Sources said Hamas told envoys from the Board of Peace and mediators Egypt, Qatar and Turkiye that ending Israeli attacks in Gaza was essential for progress in the negotiations.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the group remained open to proposals that could end the fighting and help advance discussions on the next phase of the plan.
Several core issues continue to divide the parties despite months of negotiations.
Among them are the disarmament of Hamas, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the structure of any future governing and security arrangements in the territory.
The status of Hamas-affiliated police personnel has also emerged as a point of contention, with Hamas seeking their inclusion in a future police force while Israel opposes any role for Hamas-linked officials.
According to sources cited in the talks, Israeli strikes since the "ceasefire" began have killed more than 950 Palestinians, while Palestinian militant attacks have killed four Israeli soldiers.
Israeli forces continue to control more than half of Gaza's territory as negotiations seek to prevent the truce from collapsing.
