Imminent Famine Spread and Systematic Starvation
The United Nations has issued a grave warning that the "narrow window" to prevent famine from spreading across Gaza is closing rapidly, with hundreds of thousands of Palestinians already experiencing catastrophic hunger in Gaza City and northern regions. UN Aid Chief Tom Fletcher emphasized that without an immediate and massive influx of humanitarian aid, famine will likely extend to Deir al Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September, a crisis he attributes to "choices that defy international law". The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) confirms famine conditions are already present, with 514,000 people suffering starvation and 641,000 expected to be affected within weeks. Despite Israeli claims of facilitating aid, UN agencies report that systematic obstruction by Israel has created a "man-made catastrophe" where food stacks up at borders while civilians die of malnutrition.

Military Assault on Gaza City and Forced Displacement
Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza City has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, with forces now controlling 40% of the city and intensifying bombardment under orders from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The military issued evacuation warnings to residents, directing them to relocate to Khan Younis, a region already overcrowded with makeshift tent camps and lacking basic resources. However, many Palestinians refuse to leave, citing Israel’s pattern of targeting so-called "safe zones" and the financial impossibility of repeated displacement. "Tens of thousands who left their homes were killed by Israel too, so why bother?" said Umm Nader, a mother of five in Gaza City. Israel’s bombing of high-rise buildings without evidence of military use, as seen in the recent destruction of towers housing displaced families further shows the indiscriminate nature of the assault.

Aid Restrictions and Israeli Denial
While Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) boasts of distributing aid from 1,900 trucks in a week, UN officials stress this is insufficient to address the scale of need. From March to mid-May, Israel halted all aid for 11 weeks, accelerating famine conditions. The UN attributes the crisis directly to Israel’s policies: restrictions on aid entry, destruction of agricultural land, bombing of fishing ports, and forced displacement. Israel’s dismissal of famine reports as "Hamas lies" contradicts on-the-ground evidence, including 370 documented deaths from starvation, including 121 children and hospitals overwhelmed by acute malnutrition cases.

Diplomatic Stalemate and Hamas’s Position
Hamas has consistently expressed readiness for a comprehensive deal to end the war, release all hostages, and begin reconstruction in exchange for Israeli withdrawal and an end to the siege. However, Israel insists on Hamas’s disarmament and surrender as preconditions, terms Hamas rejects without guarantees of Palestinian sovereignty. This deadlock persists despite international pressure, including from the U.S., where President Donald Trump called for hostage releases but ignored Israel’s responsibility for the humanitarian crisis. Hamas officials accuse Israel of using starvation as a "tool of war" and urge the UN to intervene forcefully to lift the blockade.

International Complicity and Urgent Calls for Action
The UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has stated that starvation as a method of warfare constitutes a war crime, emphasizing that Israel’s actions have directly caused the famine. Meanwhile, Western governments face accusations of hypocrisy: while countries like France and Canada pledge recognition of Palestinian statehood, they continue supplying weapons to Israel. With over 64,000 Palestinians killed and 1.2 million displaced, Gaza’s residents demand an immediate ceasefire and an end to international complicity in their suffering.
