Spain claimed their second FIFA World Cup title after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the 2026 World Cup final, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute.
The victory completed another European Championship and World Cup double for Spain, making them the only nation to achieve that feat twice.
Argentina finished the match with 10 players after Enzo Fernandez was sent off for a second yellow card shortly before the end of normal time.
Spain dominated possession and chances throughout the contest, while Argentina struggled to create opportunities and did not register a shot during the opening 90 minutes.
The breakthrough arrived early in the second period of extra time when Pedro Porro delivered a cross to the back post, Nico Williams headed the ball back into the area, and Torres struck a half-volley beyond Emiliano Martinez.
Martinez produced 11 saves to keep Argentina in contention for much of the match, but Spain finally converted one of their numerous chances after recording 20 shots.
Torres said after the match: "Honestly, I didn’t think too much. I just saw the ball coming to me, and I just shot with the power of all the Spanish people."
Spain also became the first World Cup-winning side to concede only one goal throughout an entire tournament.
Luis de la Fuente, 65, became the oldest coach to guide a team to a men's World Cup title.
"We are world champions," de la Fuente said.
"It was together we reached this stage."
Lionel Messi, appearing in his final World Cup, finished the tournament with eight goals and four assists but was unable to inspire Argentina in the final.
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni acknowledged Spain's superiority after the defeat.
"They were the better side – that’s the truth – but I’ll cherish the memory of them, of what they achieved, and of the value of making it this far," Scaloni said.
There was pushing and shoving after the final whistle before order was restored, and Spain's players later formed an honour guard as Argentina collected their runners-up medals.
The result ended Argentina's bid to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup and capped Spain's unbeaten run to another major international title.
