Two Killed in Shooting in Central Germany; Suspect at Large
Two people were shot and killed on Saturday evening in the western German town of Bad Nauheim, authorities said. The victims, a 59-year-old man and his 28-year-old son-in-law, were Turkish nationals and had no prior known involvement with law enforcement, police confirmed.
The shooting occurred at a residential address in Bad Nauheim, located approximately 35 kilometers north of Frankfurt. Authorities have cordoned off the area as the search for the suspect continues.
Investigation Underway
"As things stand, there is no danger to residents or the public," a police spokesperson said, though they acknowledged that the suspect or suspects remained at large.
Initial reports suggested a single perpetrator, but police have not ruled out the possibility of additional involvement. A helicopter and specialized tactical units (SEK) have been deployed in the manhunt, while officers interview witnesses and local residents.
German media outlet Bild reported that two men were briefly detained in the nearby town of Nidderau-Erbstadt but were later released after being cleared of suspicion.
Motive Remains Unclear
Authorities have indicated that the attack may have been personally motivated but have not released further details. Meanwhile, local news outlet Hessenschau reported that residents were advised against picking up hitchhikers in the area as a precaution.
The Bad Nauheim local government expressed condolences in an online statement on Sunday, extending sympathy to the victims' families.
"Despite the impact of this tragic event on our holiday today, let us remember that Easter is a powerful symbol of hope and renewal," the statement read. "Let us take this opportunity to reflect on the possibility of new beginnings, even in difficult times."
The investigation remains ongoing.
