Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in India's capital on Sunday as opposition parties renewed demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a contentious voter roll revision.
The demonstration marked an escalation in opposition protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, following a police crackdown on protesters several weeks earlier.
The protest was organized by the opposition INDIA alliance, formed in 2023 to challenge Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and supported by the youth Cockroach movement, demonstrators traveled from several states to participate in the rally at Ramlila Maidan.
Protesters waved flags, carried musical instruments and chanted slogans criticizing government policies while calling for stronger democratic safeguards.
The gathering followed a decision by police last month to remove Jantar Mantar, traditionally New Delhi's principal protest location, from the list of designated demonstration venues.
Authorities deployed thousands of police officers and paramilitary personnel, alongside more than 200 surveillance cameras, drones and body-worn cameras.
At the center of the confrontation is an electoral roll revision that has removed more than 130 million names since last year.
Opposition parties allege the process disproportionately affects minorities, particularly Muslims, and could prevent millions of eligible citizens from voting.
Congress politicians have accused the BJP of systematic electoral manipulation, describing the alleged practice as vote theft.
The Election Commission and Modi's administration reject those allegations, maintaining that the revision eliminates duplicate and ineligible registrations.
Human Rights Watch raised concerns Thursday about the implications for electoral fairness and urged authorities to abandon the disputed process.
The demonstrations also reflect continuing momentum behind the Cockroach movement, whose protests in July preceded the resignation of Modi's education minister.
Modi has not publicly addressed the latest demonstrations, while some BJP figures have characterized protesters as anarchists and alleged foreign involvement without presenting evidence.
Opposition supporters continue demanding Kumar's resignation and the cancellation of the voter roll revision.
