Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived in the United States on Monday for a four-day state visit marked by heightened political tensions and recent security concerns in Washington.

The visit, the most significant of Charles’s reign, coincides with the 250th anniversary of American independence and represents the first such trip by a British monarch in two decades.

Planned engagements include a meeting with President Donald Trump, an address to Congress, and commemorative events in multiple locations.

However, the visit has been overshadowed by a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner and growing disagreements between the two allies over the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

Visit Agenda

The king and queen were formally welcomed at Joint Base Andrews before proceeding to the White House for tea with President Trump and first lady Melania Trump.

They are also scheduled to attend a garden party at the British ambassador’s residence, continuing a tradition dating back to 1939.

Charles is expected to address Congress, becoming only the second British monarch to do so.

The royal couple will later travel to New York to commemorate victims of the September 11 attacks ahead of the 25th anniversary.

Their itinerary concludes in Virginia, where the king will meet conservation workers, reflecting his long-standing environmental advocacy.

Rising Tensions

The visit takes place amid strained relations between the United States and Britain over differing positions on the Iran conflict.

President Trump has criticized the British government for not supporting the U.S. stance, although his tone has softened in recent days.

An internal Pentagon communication has further fueled tensions by suggesting a potential review of Britain’s claim to the Falkland Islands.

Meanwhile, the shooting at the press dinner has raised security concerns, though officials confirmed the visit would proceed as planned.

The royal couple privately expressed concern over the incident and gratitude for the rapid response by law enforcement.

British officials have emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in bilateral ties, describing the approach as one of continuity and resilience.
