Global reactions intensified following the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, where a gunman breached security and triggered a rapid evacuation of President Donald Trump, senior officials and attendees.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of California, remains in custody after authorities said he charged a security checkpoint armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives.

Officials said the attacker was subdued after exchanging fire with law enforcement, and one Secret Service officer who was shot has since been released from the hospital.

Investigators continue to examine the suspect’s actions, including reports that he told authorities he was targeting officials in the Trump administration.

Global Response

Leaders across the United States and around the world swiftly condemned the attack, describing it as an act of political violence and expressing relief that those present were unharmed.

In Washington, officials from both political parties denounced the incident, with House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries stating, “The violence and chaos in America must end.”

Internationally, leaders from allied and rival nations issued similar statements, emphasizing that violence has no place in democratic systems.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was “shocked by the scenes,” while Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum both expressed relief for the safety of attendees.

European Union officials, including Ursula von der Leyen and Kaja Kallas, also condemned the attack and highlighted the importance of protecting democratic institutions.

Leaders from Israel, India, Pakistan, Australia and Spain echoed these sentiments, with many praising the swift response by US law enforcement.

Ongoing Probe

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, which officials have described as the act of a lone individual.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said there was no immediate indication that anyone else was involved, reinforcing earlier assessments by law enforcement.

Investigators have secured locations linked to the suspect, including a hotel room near the event, and are examining evidence to determine a motive.

Officials have emphasized that security measures prevented a more severe outcome, with one statement noting the attacker “attempted to create a national tragedy.”

The incident has drawn renewed attention to security at high-profile political events, even as authorities stress that rapid intervention helped avoid further casualties.
