The Democratic National Committee on Thursday released a long-awaited report examining former Vice President Kamala Harris’s defeat to Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, but the document immediately drew scrutiny for factual errors, missing sections and the omission of Gaza, one of the campaign’s most divisive issues.

DNC Chair Ken Martin acknowledged the shortcomings of the 192-page report, saying he did not endorse its findings or omissions but chose to release it in the interest of transparency.

The report, which had been withheld for months, was published with annotations flagging unsupported claims and inaccuracies, while several sections, including the executive summary and conclusion, were entirely absent.

Policy Gaps

One of the most notable omissions from the report was the absence of any mention of Gaza or Israel, despite the issue playing a major role during the 2024 election campaign.

The Biden-Harris administration faced sustained criticism over its support for Israel during the war in Gaza, including military aid and repeated vetoes of United Nations Security Council ceasefire resolutions.

The issue created divisions within the Democratic base and became a source of disillusionment among some voters who had supported President Joe Biden in 2020 but did not back Harris in 2024.

The report did not address polling or voter concerns linked to the conflict, despite surveys suggesting Gaza policy influenced voter enthusiasm and turnout.

Former Harris deputy campaign manager Rob Flaherty recently wrote that the administration struggled to answer voters’ concerns over Gaza, describing the issue as a persistent burden throughout the campaign.

The audit instead focused heavily on campaign messaging and strategic failures, arguing that Harris failed to establish a political identity beyond opposition to Trump.

It said the campaign relied too heavily on portraying Trump negatively while failing to present a compelling alternative vision to voters during a period of economic frustration.

Campaign Errors

The document also criticised the White House for assigning Harris responsibility for migration issues without adequately preparing her politically for the role.

Although Harris focused on addressing root causes of migration from Central and South America, Republicans repeatedly labelled her the administration’s “border czar,” an attack the report suggested Democrats failed to counter effectively.

The audit argued that Biden’s administration missed opportunities to strengthen Harris’s public standing earlier in the presidency.

The report additionally highlighted the impact of a Republican advertisement featuring Harris supporting access to gender transition surgeries for transgender inmates.

According to the audit, Democratic pollsters viewed the ad as highly effective and believed the campaign struggled to respond because the footage showed Harris making the remarks directly.

The report itself contained multiple factual inaccuracies and disputed assertions.

Annotations throughout the document noted that some claims contradicted public reporting or lacked supporting data.

Among the mistakes identified was an incorrect statement that Democrats won only two gubernatorial races in 2024 when they had won three.

The report also incorrectly described Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin as states that had consistently voted Democratic despite all three supporting Trump in 2016.

Martin said fixing the document would have required rebuilding the entire process from scratch because source material and supporting data had not been provided.
