A majority of Americans believe President Donald Trump has gone too far on several aspects of his immigration policies, according to a new Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll.
The survey found that 39 percent of US adults approve of Trump's handling of immigration, down from 49 percent at the beginning of his second term.
Despite the decline, immigration remains one of Trump's strongest policy areas among Republicans, with about eight in 10 continuing to support his approach.
The findings also indicate that immigration performs better for Trump within his party than either the economy or Iran.
The poll found that about half of US adults believe Trump has gone too far in deporting immigrants living in the country illegally and in restricting legal immigration.
Roughly 47 percent said he has exceeded his authority on deportations, while about three in 10 viewed his actions as appropriate and around two in 10 said he had not gone far enough.
Most Americans also said Trump has overstepped by using traffic stops to locate undocumented immigrants and by deploying federal immigration agents into US cities.
Republicans were significantly less likely to view these measures as excessive, with only about two in 10 or fewer saying Trump had gone too far on deportations or legal immigration restrictions.
The poll also found that more Americans disapprove than approve of how Immigration and Customs Enforcement is enforcing immigration laws, although Republican support for the agency remains substantially higher than among independents or Democrats.
The survey showed Trump's approval on the economy has also declined, with 32 percent of US adults approving of his handling of the issue, down from 40 percent at the start of his second term.
About seven in 10 Americans described the US economy as somewhat or very poor, while Republican respondents expressed a considerably more positive outlook.
Healthcare continued to receive low overall approval, with only about three in 10 Americans backing Trump's performance, although Republican approval on the issue has risen compared with last year.
The findings come as Democrats intensify their focus on healthcare, the cost of living and the war in Iran ahead of the midterm elections, while the poll suggests immigration remains Trump's most resilient issue among Republican voters despite broader declines in public approval.
