Police in the US state of Illinois have arrested a 19-year-old man accused of planning a mass shooting that may have targeted a Hindu temple near Chicago.

Alexandros Paporakis, a resident of Palatine, appeared in court on Wednesday after coworkers alerted authorities to threatening communications and statements allegedly expressing white supremacist beliefs.

Investigators recovered weapons, ammunition and extremist writings during a search of his home.

Threats Prompt Investigation

Paporakis was arrested on Sunday after two coworkers at a Taco Bell restaurant contacted police about his behavior and electronic messages.

According to prosecutors, he had openly identified as a white supremacist at work and expressed hostility toward Indian people.

Prosecutors alleged that Paporakis told a coworker on Saturday about plans involving a Hindu temple in Aurora, approximately 65 kilometers southwest of Palatine.

He reportedly suggested that Sunday would be significant.

The following day, he allegedly contacted a colleague about a malfunctioning firearm and sent photographs and messages showing an AR-style rifle, a tactical vest and unsuccessful attempts to fire the weapon.

Police subsequently searched his residence, recovering a rifle, multiple loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and body armor bearing imagery associated with white supremacist extremism.

Authorities also discovered a document titled "Why I fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)", containing extremist views and references to violence against South Asians, particularly Indians.

Charges and Continuing Probe

Palatine Police Chief William Nord said investigators examined electronic communications and materials indicating an alleged intention to commit mass violence.

Authorities believe the suspected attack may have been planned for Sunday, although police emphasized that the intended location remains unconfirmed.

The FBI is assisting local investigators as the inquiry continues.

Paporakis faces felony charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of a weapon, reportedly involving a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches.

His next court appearance is scheduled for late October.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi condemned the alleged threats, emphasizing the importance of protecting Americans from hatred and ensuring their freedom to worship safely.
