A public dispute between United States President Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV has intensified, highlighting deep divisions over the ongoing U.S.-Israel war in Iran and broader questions of global leadership and moral authority.

The unusually direct exchange marks a rare escalation between a sitting U.S. president and the head of the Catholic Church, unfolding across social media, public remarks, and international travel.

War Dispute

Trump sharply criticized the pope in a series of statements, calling him “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy,” while questioning his leadership and political stance.

The president said he did not “want a Pope who criticises the President of the United States,” and accused Leo of aligning with liberal positions.

Trump also suggested that Leo’s election as the first U.S.-born pope was influenced by his own presidency, claiming, “If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican.”

The criticism followed the pope’s recent remarks condemning what he described as a “delusion of omnipotence” driving global conflicts, including the war involving Iran.

Leo had also previously called threats to destroy Iranian civilization “truly unacceptable,” and questioned aspects of U.S. policy, including immigration and military actions.

Papal Response

Speaking aboard a flight to Algeria at the start of an 11-day African tour, Leo rejected the characterization of his remarks as political attacks.

“I will not enter into debate,” he said, emphasizing that his message is rooted in the Gospel and aimed at promoting peace and reconciliation.

The pope added that he does not fear the Trump administration and will continue advocating dialogue and multilateral solutions to conflict.

“I will continue to speak out loudly against war,” he said, stressing the suffering of civilians and the need for alternatives to violence.

The dispute has drawn reactions beyond the United States, with Italian political leaders expressing support for the pope’s peace efforts.

While tensions between popes and U.S. presidents have occurred before, the direct and personal nature of this exchange underscores a widening rift over war, diplomacy, and moral leadership on the global stage.
