The Islamic diplomatic world witnessed a rare moment of unified solidarity on Saturday, as twelve countries, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Türkiye, and Pakistan, issued a joint statement of “their strongest condemnation” against Israel’s decision to appoint a diplomatic envoy to the breakaway Somali region of Somaliland. The move, which formalizes a growing relationship, has been condemned by the collective voice of the Muslim world and the international community as a “flagrant violation” of the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

In The Horn of Africa

The appointment of Michael Lotem as the first Israeli ambassador to the “so-called Somaliland” is the latest and most provocative step in a deliberate campaign of expansion in the Horn of Africa. This move is a direct follow-through on Israel’s decision in December 2025 to become the first country in the world to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, seeking to frame this violation of international law as a legitimate diplomatic act, claimed the recognition was in the “spirit of the Abraham Accords”.

The government in Mogadishu immediately condemned the initial recognition as an “attack” on its sovereignty, a description that has now been proven correct by the stationing of an official envoy in the breakaway region. This pattern of unilateral action, first recognition, then the establishment of formal diplomatic relations represents a concerted effort by Israel to carve out a sphere of influence in a volatile region, often at the direct expense of existing, recognized nations.

The Violation

The joint statement, issued by the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Bangladesh, Algeria, Palestine, Türkiye, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Kuwait, left no room for ambiguity regarding the illegality of Israel’s actions. The ministers emphasized that the appointment of an envoy is not merely a diplomatic disagreement but a “blatant violation of the principles of international law, the United Nation’s Charter, and the Constitutive Act of the African Union”. They reaffirmed their “unequivocal rejection of all unilateral measures that undermine the unity of states or infringe upon their sovereignty”. This unified stance from a diverse group of nations, including key Western allies, shows the international consensus that Israel is acting as a rogue state, unilaterally redrawing borders and destabilizing established nations for its own geopolitical benefit.

The Zionist Strategy of "Divide and Conquer"

The condemnation of the 12 nations is not merely a reaction to a single diplomatic appointment. Rather, it is a response to a clear and present danger: Israel’s use of secessionist movements as a tool of geopolitical strategy in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa. The ministers warned that the move “sets a dangerous precedent that risks undermining stability in the Horn of Africa, which reflects negatively on regional peace and security as a whole”. This is the Zionist strategy of "divide and conquer" in action. By fostering the fragmentation of Somalia, Israel seeks to insert itself into a strategic corridor at the mouth of the Red Sea, a move that threatens not only Somalia but also the security of Egypt, Sudan, and the entire Arabian Peninsula.

The Accomplice

The United States has played a questionable role in this unfolding crisis, acting as a reluctant but nonetheless consistent shield for its ally. Following Israel’s initial recognition of Somaliland in December 2025, an emergency session of the UN Security Council saw 14 of its 15 members condemn the move. The United States, however, was the sole member to defend Israel’s decision, comparing it to the recognition of a Palestinian state by other countries. This weak and flawed defense exposes a brazen double standard. While the US simultaneously works to stifle Palestinian self-determination, it offers unquestioning support for Israel’s violation of Somalia’s sovereignty. US officials have also raised concerns, questioning whether the move could be linked to Israeli proposals to forcibly relocate Palestinians from Gaza to Somali territory or to establish military bases in the region.

The Growing Threat

The international response to Israel’s diplomatic escalation has been swift and coordinated. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has also condemned the move, reaffirming its full support for Somalia’s unity and legitimate institutions. The African Union has similarly rejected Israel’s actions, recognizing them for what they are: a direct threat to the stability of the continent.
